This week we circulated 2,343 items, received 361 items in transit and sent 581 items. We requested 452 items and filled 369 hold requests; registered 6 patrons for library cards, and added 64 new items. The most popular book this week is Spare by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. We hosted 16 meetings in our conference, study, and tutoring rooms for 96 people including Town of Grafton Select Board and Tai Chi Ladies, as well as private work, study, homeschool, and tutoring sessions.
The Library was closed on Monday, January 23 due to winter weather and closed at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25 due to staff shortage and impending winter weather.
The Friends are accepting donations for their upcoming book sale! Please bring gently used books and media in saleable condition during Library operating hours now through Feb 10! Please drop off items in bags or boxes to Community Room B. The Book Sale takes place Saturday Feb 11 from 10am-4pm and Sunday Feb 12 from 12-2pm.
Admin Beth attended the Board of Library Trustees meeting on Wed 1/25. We unintentionally submitted the agenda with December’s Zoom meeting link, and as soon as we were alerted by a resident, posted the correct link to the Library’s Facebook page. The Director checked in to the Town Clerk and Town Administrator the following day and then self-reported the alleged OML violation to the MA Attorney General’s office using their form.
Beth met with Mary, Evan and William to review the Library’s FY24 budget request, and met with various staff. We were short this week with staff on unscheduled leave. She drafted a Food, Beverage and Kitchen Use policy, updated the website, placed a book order, met with IT, approved meeting room use, worked on the Annual Report, paid bills, and reviewed timecards for payroll. She met or corresponded with Trustees on various issues, including the Library walkabout, Capital Campaign, and general check in. We launched a Niche Academy training program for Library staff that begins with The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness, which is about treating all patrons with dignity and respect while enforcing library policy.
Beth attended the construction team meeting – the gate at the bottom of the stairs has a lock! Millwork continued on the counter and sink remediation. She met with Mary, William and Mark Sullivan to review the final grant report for the MPLCP grant. We still need a permanent certificate of occupancy, which is the next benchmark to get our fourth grant disbursement.
Eileen maintained the collection of periodicals, took care of incoming mail, and prepared bills. Debby compiled the Weekly Report, worked on upcoming social media posts, and completed payroll and scheduling tasks. She attended and took notes for the Board of Library Trustees meeting on Wednesday evening.

Jane posted the New York Times Best Seller List for print and audio fiction and recommended titles for purchase, corrected patron records with the wrong home library, worked on an endcap display for February (“Meet the Presidents” featuring biographies of recent presidents), continued to post the Snow Joke of the Week, and watched the Niche Academy webinar about library displays. Ranjita posted the New York Times Best Seller List for print and audio nonfiction and recommended titles for purchase, processed ComCat requests, performed a routine check of the Library of Things, processed pending library card applications, watched the Niche Academy webinar about library displays and the first part of the webinar on mental illness. Sandhya managed out of network requests for materials, worked on interlibrary loans, cleared expired holds from the hold shelf and followed up with patrons, processed pending library card applications, watched the Niche Academy webinar about library displays and dealing with disruptive patrons, research March programming ideas for adults, and worked on the home delivery service, including ordering items, making calls, and coordinating volunteers. Allie performed readers advisory, processed new fiction and large prints, arranged new books on display, ran the 2022 StaffConnect report for front and lobby gates (we have 1,872 instances of the gate catching material not checked out!), and watched two webinars including “Level Up Your Book Displays” and “The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness.” She finalized the newsletter adding Spotlight on Fiction, events graphics, deleting unused library graphics, proofreading, adding “for screen readers” alt-text descriptions for the blind and communicated via email with our Bibliotheca rep about books entering wrong bin.
Children’s Services Sarah watched the First Amendment Audits Webinar Recording + Evaluation, began the Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness Core Training, ran four outreach sessions at SGES, three outreach sessions at NGES, two sessions of Toddler Time, and one session of Preschool Storytime She met with Beth, communicated with staff regarding an onsite injury and future time off, met with Kristin, and met with Cyndi. Jen updated the CR newsletter, wrote PR for the upcoming “Cradles to Crayons” PJ fundraiser, ran a session of library babies, updated EventKeeper, began the Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness Core Training, and assisted patrons. Cyndi met with Sarah, watched the First Amendment Audits Webinar Recording + Evaluation, completed the Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness Core Training, planned for upcoming programming, and assisted patrons. Stacie planned for upcoming programs, made a supply request list, created book displays, and planned upcoming CR passive programming. Kristin delivered C.A.R.E.S. books for NGES & SGES, and communicated with local schools regarding library field trips and Grafton History Day. Mare assisted patrons, communicated with volunteers, watched the First Amendment Audits Webinar Recording + Evaluation, began the Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness Core Training, and kept in touch with staff during the snow closures.
Teen Services The Teen Room has been getting some updates this week with the computer counter being lowered to meet ADA standards and allow for use of existing rolling chairs as well as the furniture and carpet in the gaming space getting a deep clean by Paul. Allison, Sarah S., Sarah L. and Beth covered the Teen Room. Allison took the Niche Academy webinar The Librarian’s Guide to Homelessness, met with Beth and Sarah B., and worked on creating new badges for upcoming Beanstack challenges. Sarah reviewed webinars and updated the monthly manga release spreadsheet covering titles through the end of August.
Reference Services Heidi and Eric assisted with tech and reference questions as well as circulation. Heidi hosted the Inspirational Book Group and Guided Meditation discussion of The Self-Care Solution: A Year of Becoming Happier, Healthier, and Fitter — One Month at a Time by Jennifer Ashton. She also worked on program planning and collection development. Eric prepped for the February nonfiction book displays; met with Paul Jin, CEO of Filmocracy; started a new online professional development training series offered by the library and attended an “Access to Justice” information session which talked about public libraries partnering with MA court services to give pro se litigants digital access to resources and courtrooms.
Technical Services This week Cynthia watched the First Amendment Audit webinar by MMA and the Librarians Guide to Homelessness, worked on creating records for Library of Things items, and cataloged a portable sewing machine to add to the Children’s Room’s Library of Things collection. She cataloged new adult fiction, nonfiction, and young adult fiction, trained a volunteer, and worked on ordering documentation from Baker & Taylor.
UPDATE 1/27/23: The room is now available! The Teen Game Room will be unavailable from now until Thursday afternoon to give our newly cleaned carpet a chance to dry.
The Maker Space and computers remain unavailable as construction is ongoing to make the space more accessible for patrons.

Admin 18 staff participated in ALICE Active Shooter Training – a practical application simulation will be held on March 9, 2023 during our next staff development day. Staff participated in Library Olympics, department meetings.
Beth updated the Library’s website and event calendar with 2023 meetings and closings. She provided a budget revision to Accounting. She made COVID test kits and masks from the Board of Health to Library patrons. She had multiple meetings with staff and union stewards and drafted an informational list requested by the union. She prepared meeting materials for the upcoming Board of Library Trustees meetings, attended the Friends meeting, kicked off GUM Jam, supervised a volunteer who is working on scanning some historical records, and paid bills.

Sarah met with Beth, attended two meetings, worked on collection maintenance and development, brainstormed program planning, responded to emails, lesson planned for upcoming school visits and storytime programming, and ran a children’s room staff meeting. Jen updated EventKeeper, updated the CR calendar and worked on the CR newsletter. Cyndi cut out shapes for Kristin, filmed 2 TikToks for library promotion, put the supply closet back together, began measuring and ironing fabric for the sewing club, and updated volunteers regarding the movement of the book sections. Stacie planned for upcoming programming, made a wish list of craft supplies, and looked into gumball machine cost for use with the library’s read to bead program. Kristin dropped off C.A.R.E.S books to both NGES and SGES, communicated with the local schools, and assisted patrons. Mare assisted patrons, answered reference questions, reviewed emails, and communicated with volunteers.
Teen Services Allison completed the fiction weeding project, donating all books withdrawn from our collection the Friends of the Library for their upcoming book sale. She also updated all the endcap displays using graphics from @thepulpgirls pairing book genres with astrology signs so each endcap features two astrology signs and selections from the paired genre.
Reference Services
Heidi and Eric assisted with tech and reference questions as well as circulation. Heidi hosted the Daytimers discussion of George & Lizzie by Nancy Pearl, the GPL Mystery Book Group’s discussion of The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Michael Chabon, and worked on program planning. Eric worked on an Excel sheet with Sandhya for patron programming surveys and shifted books in the non-fiction section to make space.
Technical Services Cynthia ordered new books and unpacked items as they arrived, cataloged new DVDs, CDs, and adult fiction and nonfiction; created a bookplate and added it to a book that was donated in memory of Allison Elaine Burns by Amy and Gregory Marr. She also worked on fixing problem items, and had a meeting with Beth.

Admin Beth worked on submitting outstanding minutes for Board of Library Trustees, updated the Procedures manual, made website updates and managed staff. She contacted our lighting company about some ongoing issues with sensor lighting throughout the building, accepted a quote for phase one of cupola restoration, and called American Alarm regarding a corrupted board on the fire panel (the system is operational, and the panel was subsequently replaced this week). She reviewed the FY24 budget submission, and met with IT on installation of MS Office 365/Outlook and an authenticator app. She paid bills, dealt with an HVAC issue, attending training for a new book vendor, covered in the Children’s Room due to a staffing shortage on Monday evening and met with the Library Planning and Building Committee. She trained a new volunteer who will be scanning historical documents for us, completed a Department of Labor RFI survey, in coordination with IMLS and others, for information related to digital literacy and digital resilience in relationship to workforce development. She worked on budget, the nonfiction book order, the final construction report, and grants.

Sandhya touched base with a community group and discussed adding daytime programming for adults, managed out of network requests for materials, worked on interlibrary loans and followed up with patrons, cleared expired holds from the hold shelf and contacted patrons about pickup, processed pending library card applications, prepared for the main display for February, coordinated with volunteers about scheduling, researched ideas for February programming for adults, sent renewal forms for two museum passes to billing department, and worked on the home delivery service, including ordering items, making calls, and coordinating volunteers. Ranjita caught up after her time off, performed the monthly AED check, and performed the weekly check on the Library of Things.

Jen planned upcoming programming, updated EventKeeper and social media, worked on the CR newsletter, and troubleshot tech issues. Cyndi began to put away items in the CR program room after HVAC work was completed, planned upcoming programming, met with staff, organized donated fabric, finalized the Library of Things binder. Stacie removed damaged Magnatiles from use, planned upcoming displays and room decorations, planned upcoming programming, and troubleshot tech issues. Kristin ran 3 sessions of Book Worm Book Club, ran a session of Comic Creators Club, delivered books to NGES and SGES, and planned upcoming programming. Mare has been out sick this week although periodically communicating with volunteers and staff.
Teen Services Allison continued to weed the fiction collection to make room on the shelves for new books, prepared carts of books to order, and has been working on a large book display to put up in the teen room next week: books based on astrological signs.

Our New Years at Noon program for families with young children had 148 attendees on Saturday December 31, 2022. The Library was closed to the public on Monday January 2 in observance of the New Year’s holiday.

The Board of Library Trustees policy subcommittee met to discuss Parking Policy on Wednesday evening. The Construction team met on Thursday afternoon. Additionally, a team met to review roof issues and water leaks into the Community Room. American Alarm was on site on Wednesday for their annual inspection. Millwork began on Thursday, January 5, to lower counters in various areas of the building to meet ADA compliance.

Jane set up the staircase display for January for “They’re #1” (the first book in a book series), corrected typos on the library website, collected items with alerts for cataloging corrections, posted the New York Times Best Seller List for print and audio fiction and non-fiction and recommended titles for purchase. Allie processed CLIO and ComCat items, set up three January endcap displays, edited and sent the newsletter, displayed museum and calendar event flyers, recorded 7-day and 3-week fiction statistics, answered patron questions about Hoopla, shifted and began weeding fiction books and helped develop a shelving plan. Sandhya managed out of network requests for materials, worked on interlibrary loans and followed up with patrons, cleared expired holds from the hold shelf, helped shift fiction books, prepared for the upcoming January “Color Me Calm” programs, set up the January endcap display for Indian authors, updated museum pass information on TixKeeper, and worked on the home delivery service, including ordering items, making calls, coordinating volunteers, and getting a new patron set up for the service. Ranjita should be back next week. We can’t wait!
Children’s Services
Sarah reviewed email, met with staff, attended to collection development and maintenance, coordinated with MSES about their yearly Grafton History Day field trip, and planned for upcoming outreach programming. Jen updated EventKeeper, posted to social media, prepped the CR newsletter, planned for upcoming storytime programming, and assisted patrons. Cyndi washed and organized fabric that was donated to the CR sewing program, coordinated with CR volunteers, and brainstormed future programming. Stacie looked at ways to maximize collection shelving and creative reorganization since we are running out of shelf space for CR materials, and planned for upcoming room decorations and programming. Mare coordinated CR volunteers, shelf read, and shelved since we were down a number of volunteers due to the holiday. Kristin planned upcoming programming. Jen, Stacie, and Mare recovered from a hugely successful New Year’s at Noon celebration.
Teen Services
Allison continued to work on the teen fiction weeding project and prepared carts of books to order as well as working on entering December stats. Sarah S. removed holiday decorations from the teen room and prepared her desk space for upcoming construction.

Heidi and Eric assisted with tech and reference questions as well as circulation. Heidi worked on program planning and PR. Eric worked on weeding the non-fiction collection and set up the nonfiction book display for January with books to help people reach their 2023 goals.

Cynthia ran reports for cataloging stats for the month of December, wrote her monthly report, ordered and unpacked books as they arrived, cataloged new young adult manga, DVDs, and children’s books. She met with Bev Mara to show her the books that were ordered and added to our collection with a donation made by her family in memory of her late husband, Tom Mara.
Week of December 26-31, 2022 This week we circulated 2,157 items, received 300 items in transit and sent 446 items. We requested 359 items and filled 219 hold requests; registered 7 patrons for library cards, and added 154 new items. Admin Beth submitted the Library’s draft FY23 budget, wrote the Director’s note for the Library’s January newsletter, completed items on her Trustee task list, reviewed a list of outstanding minutes for Building Committee (mostly from canceled or postponed meetings), worked on a non-fiction book order, scheduled meeting room use and confirmed a facility rental for a piano recital (2pm Sunday January 8, open to the public), worked on the Library’s 2022 Annual Report, and met with the Construction Team. She worked on the 2023 Food Permit Application, building inspection documents, and scheduled the annual inspection of the alarm system. She addressed a museum pass issue and made website updates. She reviewed meeting minutes and agendas for upcoming meetings, reviewed policy and December incident reports, and corresponded with IT regarding domain issues for transferring to Office 365. She covered breaks in the Children’s Room and at Borrower Services for staff on leave. We dealt with an ongoing leak in the Community Room and ongoing HVAC issues. Beth is preparing a letter of intent, to submit an application for the MHC community preservation grant round in March 202 for restoration of the Library’s cupola, and is working on the final report for the MPLCP grant, due Feb 1, 2023.
Eileen ordered periodicals for 2023. Debby compiled the Weekly Report, collaborated with CR staff on upcoming social media posts, worked with Benchmark to inventory and order Xerox toner cartridges and completed payroll, scheduling, and Board of Library Trustees’ tasks.

Jane continued updating links on the library’s site in conjunction with the new Town of Grafton website, collected items with alerts for cataloging corrections, posted the New York Times Best Seller List for print and audio fiction and recommended titles for purchase, corrected records for patrons with the wrong home library, and gathered local materials and prepared the staircase display and endcap display for January. Allie created the January endcap poster “Art Browsery”, reviewed the training form for New Year’s goals, adjusted the font for the Evergreen print templates, wrote screen reader descriptions for graphics in the e-newsletter, created a printable adult January events calendar and Museum of the Month poster, processed new adult fiction arrivals, emailed Bibliotheca about a problem with the external return window over the weekend, performed troubleshooting on the Children’s Room’s RFID plate, and retrained in CLIO. Sandhya and Ranjita were out this week. We can’t wait until they get back!
With schools being on holiday break, we have had a lot of families using the room and taking out materials. Keeping the room clean and tidy has taken a bit of work. Sarah has been enjoying a much-deserved vacation. Jen has worked on the January newsletter and prepared for the New Year’s at Noon event. Cyndi has gone through the fabric donation and is slowly washing and organizing the fabric collection for the sewing club and continues to work on updating the Library of Things Binder. Stacy ran Winter Arts. Kristin is preparing for the book clubs while Mare has been in close contact with our volunteers about holiday closings and their holiday plans.
Teen Services This week Allison worked on a Dusty Titles report and prepared the January Teen Newsletter. Sarah helped patrons with readers advisory and worked on shelf reading nonfiction.
Reference Services Heidi and Eric assisted with tech and reference questions as well as circulation. Heidi hosted the Inspirational Book Group (and guided meditation) discussion of The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact by Chip and Dan Heath and worked on program planning and PR. Eric worked on weeding the non-fiction collection and planned book displays for January.
Technical Services Cynthia worked on ordering new books and unpacking new books and DVDs. She cataloged new adult fiction, nonfiction, and graphic novels and worked more on the bookplates that were part of a recent donation to the library by printing and adding them to the donated books.
