American History Online
What is it for?
This database indexes many sources and covers topics in American history from Colonial times to the present. To see which sources are indexed, choose Sources from the top of the screen.
How do I get to it?
1. Start at the Grafton Public Library homepage. Click Online and Digital Resources from the list on the left.
2. Scroll down to "American History Online".
3. If you are in the library, click on American History Online.
4. If you are at work or home, from that page click the appropriate link and type in your library barcode number and click Go.
How does it work? Try it out!
Type CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS in the Search box and click Go. You will be taken to a list of results broken down by type. You may see biographies, events & topics, primary sources, images & videos, and/or maps & charts. Click the title of any article to see the full text.
From the article page, you can save the item, print the item (printouts in the library are 10˘ per page), or email it for later use. If you email it, it should be in your mailbox within minutes. Saved items appear when you click Saved Items on the top right of the screen.
Help
Help screens and search tips are available. They are general but may have some useful tips. The Advanced Search has search tips on its front page.
Saving articles
You can save articles by clicking the plus sign next to an article title in the results list or by saving an article from the full text screen. Saved items appear when you click Saved Items on the top right of the screen.
Citations
Once you are viewing an article, you can see the citation at the bottom, ready-made for use in a bibliography. If you need a different style citation, click How to Cite for more options.
Other searches
Advanced Search
The advanced search allows you to search by all words or by phrase and to include or exclude certain words. You can also specify searches by keyword or article title.
Browse
Browse lets you pick a category, from biographies, events and topics, primary sources, timelines, images and videos, and maps and charts. Choosing one of these options brings you to a ready-made list of topics, plus a timeline and other information related to the type of source you picked.
Learning Centers
Set up by era or decade, you’ll get articles from a variety of sources. This may be a good place to get information on the late 20th and early 21st century to supplement reference books that were published earlier.
